>> a perfect day

Spent the day with my best bud Gina, and we hit up the town with some of my favorite activities:

  1. Breakfast at Patrick's bakery. It's located in a garden/plant store, and feels like you're outside even though you're not (which was probably good since it was - 2 degrees today). Chocolate croissants were the BEST! I had to go back for more! I'm pretty sure all we talked about the whole time we were eating was how good the croissants were. Seriously, go get one.
  2. Thrift shopping at the Cottage House. I had heard tons about it and never been. It's only open 5 days a month, and this was the perfect time to check it out. So many awesome pieces, but only took home a little gold shelf (probably the smallest thing in the store!).
  3. Shopping at Southdale.
  4. Lunch at California Pizza Kitchen. BBQ Chicken pizza was delicious.

Perfect day with one of my favorite people. What more could I ask for?

{my brother and me}

I also found this while cleaning... it's a poster of pictures of my brother and I. I don't even remember making this, but it's pretty great, especially that caricature in the middle.

{what i thought life would be}

I've been going through & getting rid of a lot of things at my mom's house, and through the process I have been surprised/entertained by what I've found. One of which was a poster that I made in 9th grade mapping out what the future of my life would look like. Here's what I envisioned:

Spring 2002 - I start to check out colleges and also am beginning to receive letters from some of them.
Spring 2003 - I go to senior prom with a respectful and nice guy.
Spring 2003 - I graduate from High School with scholarship offers from good colleges.
Summer 2003 - I go on a cruise for my senior trip with all of my friends. We have lots of fun!
Fall 2003 - Begin college at Gustavus (where my mom went). I am majoring in Special Education.
June 2007 - Graduate from college with a degree in art. I may consider going to graduate school sometime.
July 2007 - Get my first real job as an interior designer at an interior design studio in Chicago.
August 2007 - Meet a guy at work and he asks me out to dinner.
June 2009 - I get married to the guy I met before. We go on a honeymoon to Alaska.
July 2009 - Look for a townhouse in a suburb of Chicago.
August 2009 - Buy a townhouse in the suburbs.
September 2010 - We both get transferred to the Minneapolis office. Begin to look for a house.
October 2010 - We buy a single family house in the suburbs and shortly after find out we're having twins (one boy & one girl).

Isn't it hilarious to look back on what you're dreams were at different times in your life, and even more so,  to see how much they change over the years? I can't even begin to imagine how different my life would be right now if I was married with twins (one boy & one girl to be exact). Although it's been a bumpy road at times, the reality of the last 10 years is so much better than anything I could have imagined for myself, and I know it's just the beginning. Maybe I should plan out the next 10 years so that I can do this again and re-entertain myself. What do you think? What plans did you have for your life that turned out completely different than expected?

{a friend in my city}

As promised, here's a little snapshot of Jyl's trip to Minnesota. As you can see, we had tons of fun visiting the sculpture park, hanging at the beach, going on a mini road-trip, winning big (well just jyl) at the casino, and eating ALOT of food - this cake Jyl made was fantastic (recipe here although we used raspberries instead of blackberries). It was really great spending time with her for 4 whole days, and I can't wait until the next time we get to do it again!

{head in the clouds}

Ummm ... so I may have just realized that yesterday I told you all Happy Friday when it was indeed - yes - it was Thursday. Guess I have my head in the clouds - woops. Life has just been really busy lately, but this weekend I'm headed up north for a weekend away and hopefully when I get back next week I will be recharged and refreshed! Hoping you all find a little time this weekend to relax and recharge for yourself! See you Monday!

p.s. - Isn't this photo series just fantastic?!

{thoughts}

Here i am again, finally. I'm pretty sure i've fallen off the blogging wagon and am having a difficult time hopping back on. I've been wanting to post for awhile about what I've gone through this past year, and especially these last few months as I have been trying to figure out what was next for me in life. About a year ago I decided to quit my full time job in a desire to explore other opportunities that were out there. I really enjoyed designing clothing, but there was something missing for me. It was a big leap of faith to leave a full time job while the economy left much to be desired, but I felt like it was the right step for me.

Somewhere along the way I made a decision to move back to Minnesota which was something that had always been in the back of my mind. If quitting my job was a leap of faith, moving to Minnesota was an even bigger one. Yes I had my family. Yes I had a huge support network of friends and acquaintances. Yes I could live at home. But I also didn't have my fabulous group of creative friends. I didn't have a professional network. I didn't have my group of friends that had become like family over the 7 1/2 years that I had lived in Washington. I didn't even know what companies were all in the city. But I felt in my heart that it was the right decision and that was enough for me.

As soon as I got home in February I started looking online for jobs, trying to figure out what companies to seek out and what roles I wanted to pursue. Let me just tell you, it was overwhelming. Thankfully I got connected with a small group consisting of people who were all searching for jobs. Through the meetings I learned that the most important thing when looking for a job is networking. With so many candidates out there, you have to make that personal connection within the company in order to stand out. Not only that, but I tried to remind myself that an opportunity was out there waiting for me, and if I kept pushing forward, eventually I would get to that place. So I talked to tons of people, both employed and unemployed, I attended career groups, I went to the small group, I researched companies.

And you want to know the amazing thing? The one company that was always in the back of my mind as the place I wanted to work is the company that I ended up at. And you know how I found the job? Networking. It wasn't even posted online yet. So why am I telling you all of this? I'm telling you this because it has been a year full of questions, worry, and uncertainty. A year of questioning the decisions that I was making and the path that I was going down. But through it all there was also faith. Faith in what my heart was telling me, faith in trusting myself, faith in believing that there is a unique path for each one of us that will lead us to exactly where we are supposed to be. I know I was lucky that I ended up at the company that I had thought about for so long, and it's not always that easy. But I do believe that if you take steps, even baby steps, toward your dream, and keep trusting, that God will handle the rest and eventually get you exactly where you are meant to be.

{basement remix}

When I moved back home at the beginning of February, I immediately saw the unfinished basement as a potential space for my studio, and a home to all of my craft + sewing supplies. Since it was unfinished, that meant that I didn't have to worry about spilling glue, glitter, paint, or other things all over the floor (dream come true!). So, let me just say that I have finally gotten the space to a point that I am happy with.  Take a peek at the transformation from start to finish ...

Before: My boxes were everywhere!

Before

And now for the after photos .... ready for this??

Keep scrolling ....

Ta-da!

After! The furniture that I used was all found in the basement - nice, huh?

After.

After: I covered a card table with a $3 piece of fabric from the thrift store.

After: The work table lined with pots of craft supplies.
After: A trunk from a thrift store opens to reveal baskets of yarn, ribbon, lace, and bias tape.

After: An office organizer holds inspiration binders, as well as jars of random things (yes, that is a jar of googly eyes).

Whew! So happy to be able to share this with you finally. There's a lot more that I could do, but since I will be moving out eventually I thought this was a good stopping point for now. Now I can craft away!

{rain, rain}

{corners of my life}

Okay. So there is a chance that i may not have been creating something every day. But, you'll be happy to know that I have been getting my room and my craft space organized so that I can function. Yes, I am one of those people that can't think straight unless the space around me is neat + clean. Anyways, I snapped a few shots today of the progress. Take a look ...

Mood board in my room. I simply pinned a piece of fabric to the wall and {voila!} - a giant inspirational canvas.

Shelves above my bed. Notice how I cropped it just perfectly so you couldn't see my un-made bed?

Front page of HK Magazine + a few bamboo steamers I brought home from my trip

Zippers galore! Any ideas for these??

I put my fabric on an old quilt rack, and I have garment patterns stored in the suitcases.

I just uploaded a bunch of photos onto my computer, and I found these gems that I took on the flight to Minnesota a few weeks ago. It was a perfect winter afternoon: snow, sunshine, and blue skies. These are the moments that make me love Minnesota winters.

{crash landing}

Source: google.com via jennie on Pinterest

Well I'm back in MN, and I feel a bit like the girl in this photograph by the amazing Tim Walker; like I just crashed into a new place and now have to find my way. Yes I do realize that being back in the city I grew up in makes this task a bit easier, but it's still a fresh start. I am making major progress unpacking in hopes that when I am all settled it will actually start sinking in that this is not a vacation and I am going to be here awhile. I think it's working, and my stuff looks right at home here. I'm excited and overwhelmed all at the same time, and the next task will be searching for a job; hopefully I can find something that will challenge me creatively while also giving me room to grow and explore what's next for me. I'll let you know how the search goes!

{Out of It}

What is it about the holidays that leave us feeling like we are drained of all our energy? I just got back from MN last night, and I'm completely exhausted and feel like the girl in this picture, with my head in a barrel out of tune with everything that's going on around me. Unfortunately I can't just lie in a field until I find my energy - work, a trip, a move, and a few events to plan have my mind spinning and my feet moving, and I'm just hoping I can wrap everything up in the next couple of weeks.

I hope you all had a relaxing, fun-filled holiday weekend, and are somehow finding time to relax after the craziness of it all!

{one week}

{one week} from yesterday is Christmas.
{one week} from yesterday I will be in MN.
{one week} from yesterday I will be surrounded by family.
{one week} from yesterday I will be munching on cookies and delicious food.
{one week} from yesterday I will be cozied up in warm socks and a warm sweater.
{one week} from yesterday I will be content, relaxed, and peaceful.

I can't wait!

{I'm so excited}

I'm so excited!!!
Why you ask?
Because one of my best friends {Sondra} is coming to Seattle today!!!
Makes me want to jump up and down just like this picture.

Stay tuned for pictures (and maybe videos) after the weekend...

{cold}

These are the words most likely to be coming out of my mouth these past few days (and probably many more to come). Yesterday it snowed here all day. I love the snow, but oh my! was it cold outside. I know my Minnesota girl jeans should make me less of a baby, but I'm sad to say that's not the truth. Today I am bundled up in a billion layers ready to head outside in hopes that I will beat the cold and stay warm. We'll see how that goes...
